Safety against critical events
A single cell failure in a high-voltage battery pack can trigger a catastrophic cascade — thermal runaway, fire, and structural failure. The material must survive extreme heat, maintain electrical isolation, keep mechanical integrity under compression, and never off-gas toxic substances. This expertise area groups thermal runaway protection, fire resistance, and dielectric insulation capability.
We develop SIL (silica fiber) and MP (microporous) barriers — the two differential solutions in the belcor® portfolio. Electrical insulation capability is integrated within this expertise area: our SiO₂-based substrates also deliver exceptional dielectric performance. For requirements where the market offers no adequate alternatives, these are the solutions that make the difference.

What temperature can the barrier withstand?
Belcor® SIL substrates based on BELCOTEX® SiO₂ fiber withstand continuous temperatures up to 1200°C and short-duration peaks beyond that. belcor® MP (microporous) is rated up to 800°C. The exact specification depends on the multilayer configuration.
Does the material off-gas during thermal runaway?
No. SIL and MP solutions are specifically designed to produce no toxic off-gassing under thermal stress — a critical differentiator versus aerogel and foam alternatives. No binders, no organic compounds that combust.
What dielectric capability does this area cover?
Our SiO₂-based substrates achieve dielectric strengths above 15 kV/mm, supporting high-voltage pack architectures up to 800V and beyond. Dielectric insulation is integrated within this safety expertise area — the same material that provides thermal protection also delivers electrical isolation.

Battery performance & lifespan
Lithium cells swell during charge/discharge cycles. Uncontrolled swelling creates uneven pressure, accelerating degradation and reducing cycle life. Too much compression damages cells; too little leads to capacity fade. Helping cells perform better and last longer is the central goal of this expertise area.
We develop precision compression solutions with calibrated elastic behaviour — maintaining optimal cell contact pressure throughout the full lifecycle without permanent set. SOFT (pure SiO₂ fiber pad) is a key product here. The final solution is typically a multilayer assembly.

How does compression affect cell lifetime?
Uncontrolled swelling creates uneven pressure across the cell stack, accelerating localised degradation and reducing overall cycle life. A precisely calibrated compression pad maintains optimal contact pressure throughout the full lifecycle — typically extending usable life significantly compared to unmanaged stacks.
What is belcor® SOFT and why is it relevant here?
SOFT is based on pure BELCOTEX® SiO₂ fiber without any binders or additives. It is the cleanest pad solution available: bio-soluble, non-toxic, no off-gassing, EU-produced. It provides both thermal stability and precise compression behaviour — making it ideal as a cell compression pad where purity and safety are non-negotiable.
Can belcor® pads replace standard foam pads?
Yes, and they offer significantly better long-term performance. Unlike conventional foam, belcor® compression solutions maintain elastic behaviour across thousands of cycles with <5% permanent set — eliminating the progressive loss of contact pressure that leads to capacity fade.
